Hebrew university-admissions glossary
Words you will meet on university sites and at registration offices, explained with their pronunciation.
Tests
- פסיכומטריpsikhometri
- The Psychometric Entrance Test (PET). The SAT replaces it at most universities, except medicine.
- סכםsekhem
- Composite admission score combining the bagrut average and the PET (or converted SAT). Each university weighs it differently.
- בגרותbagrut
- The Israeli matriculation certificate. Universities require a full bagrut, often with unit conditions (e.g. 5 units of math for Technion).
- יחידות לימוד (יח"ל)yekhidot limud
- Bagrut study units (3/4/5). Five-unit subjects earn a bonus in the average.
- אמיר"ם / אמי"רAmiram / Amir
- University English placement test. Your SAT R&W score usually replaces it (e.g. 670+ = exemption at Technion and BGU).
- יע"לYAEL
- Hebrew proficiency test for applicants who studied in another language. Often required of Arabic-school graduates; the SAT does not replace it.
- פטור מאנגליתptor me'anglit
- Exemption from university English courses, granted by R&W or Amiram score.
Admission
- סף קבלהsaf kabala
- Admission threshold for a department (by composite or PET/SAT). Changes yearly with demand.
- מכינהmekhina
- University preparatory year for applicants below the requirements; some are designed for Arab students and include Hebrew and English.
- רישום / הרשמהrishum
- University registration, usually January–March; each university has its own deadline.
- מועד א' / מועד ב'mo'ed alef / bet
- First/second sitting. For PET/SAT you may sit more than once; the best single sitting counts.
- ראיון / מיוניםre'ayon / miyunim
- Interview or extra screening (common in medicine, social work, education), separate from the SAT.
Paperwork
- תעודת זהותte'udat zehut
- ID card. Your College Board name must match the Latin spelling on your ID/passport exactly.
- אישור לימודיםishur limudim
- School confirmation of study/graduation; sometimes needed for registration or scholarships.
- קוד מוסדkod mosad
- The university's College Board code for official score reports (e.g. Hebrew University 4551, Reichman 4267).
Tuition & scholarships
- שכר לימודskhar limud
- Annual tuition. Scholarships for Arab students exist from the Council for Higher Education and the universities.
- מלגהmilga
- Scholarship. Ask each university about its integration and achievement programs.
- מעונותme'onot
- Student dormitories; separate, usually early, registration.
